gone fishing

Description

Been working on this one for several weeks. Anyway its a dragon fishing on a rock that originally started as a notebook doodle. Scanned it in and mucked about on photoshop. I think I finally found my coloring style digitally, its one of the fancy brushes photoshop now has. I'm really pleased with this.

And this will likely be yet another new character because this guy and his glowy tongue are awesome. He uses said glowy tongue to fish which are attracted to the bright light when its night or dark.

Edit: fixed the weird desaturation

Edit: Feel free to use this as a background but please don't repost etc without credit.

This is an excellent piece and really shows how your art is coming along.

I love the subdued colours flecked with sections of neon in the oranges of the feathers and on the tongue.

This whole piece has kind of a soft, foggy feeling which works excellently with the atmosphere and I like how you have kept even the glow looking soft.

Your idea behind this piece is really neat too, I love that you gave the dragon a sort of "fishing lure" tongue, what a clever idea and it seems to be working out quite well for him!

I love the dragon's pose too. His feet are really cool and I love how he grips the rock. You know, his pose does kind of make me think he is a younger dragon. I feel like maybe he is not totally steady on the rock and that this may be one of his earlier fishing attempts after having been shown by an elder. His expression seems concentrated, but a little unsure as the fish fly out at him. It gives him a ton of character even if I am not sure if that is the look you were going for, I absolutely love it.

As far as critique goes, I love the texture in the water, it feels very painterly however there is an area in the distance (to the far left of the piece) where I feel that the water and background kind of become one smudge of paint stroke and it seems a little off especially because the rest of the background is rather crisp compared to that area.

This is a kind of a minor critique but I suppose I will mention it just in case. It appears to be night time in this piece and yet the atmosphere is rather bright.
This is fine because I know a moon can really light things up however you might be able to better define the night by deepening some of the shadows on say, the mountains and in the waters.

I researched some photos of photography and even found ones where there were two light sources at night (such as your picture has) and in these photos, while details can still be seen the shadows are almost black. This is a critique I have received frequently for I have often understated my shadows and lately I notice when I work to deepened them my art has more depth.

So, while I feel that your lighting is actually really excellent in this piece if you wanted to perhaps exaggerate the night time effect you could just deepen some of the shadows without losing any of your gorgeous details.

Amazing job! This piece is really excellent!<img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/r/r…" width="15" height="18" alt=":blackrose:" title="Black Rose"/>
